Engineering at Queen Mary

Introduction
Engineering at Queen Mary has a distinguished tradition in both teaching and research, dating back to the beginning of the 1900s. The Aeronautical Engineering Section was the first to be established in the UK, in 1908, and was also the first to offer an Avionics undergraduate degree course, in 1976. Pioneering research includes developments of advanced computational techniques to predict flow around flying vehicles and advanced computational codes for the design of aerospace structures. This is complemented by experimental aerodynamics using high and low speed wind tunnels. A theme that continues in our cutting edge research in aerodynamics and aerospace structures.

Mechanical Engineering is also long-established; its research reputation has been founded on work on thermodynamic principles, such as the energy concept, on combustion and on condensation heat transfer. Medical Engineering is a relatively new undergraduate discipline although we have been at the leading edge of several aspects of medical engineering research; the research focuses on tissue and cell engineering, orthopaedic implants, biofluids and microcirculation and rehabilitation engineering.

More recently, exciting undergraduate programmes in Sports Engineering and Design & Innovation have been set up, driven by academic research activity in this area.

Medical Electronics & Physics offers an exciting MSc Course and new directions of research in the medical stream. Recently new MSc courses in Biomedical Engineering and Aerospace have been introduced.

Research is central to the Department and it is strongly committed to internationally competitive research, leading to a grade 5 in the last research assessment exercise. There are considerable opportunities for undertaking research in the department. Research is not pursued in isolation, but feeds into undergraduate teaching. Research is supported by extensive experimental and computational facilities.
